Goals for this year:
Goal One: Build Growth Mindset
According to many books and many studies, adjusting our mindset to a growth mindset, instead of a fixed mindset, can help build success. We gain a better understanding of how our brain works, how we learn and what it takes to be the change we want in ourselves.
If you are curious about this subject you can check out the book Mindset by Carol Dweck.
There is also another book that I am using to assist this process, Mindsets in the Classroom by Mary Cay Ricci.

Goal Two: Build Critical Thinking Skills
In order to better understand complex text and complicated writing and the strategies to apply them to our own process, we will look at ways to improve our critical thinking skills. This will be done with diverse assignment grids to allow for choice and to push our thinking into harder assignments where students must access there own ideas and learn to support them.
This will require writing, usage of technology and apps to create projects, as well as appsmashing....using a number of apps to create a project.
We will also DOODLE !!!! Research once again shows that the use of doodling....once thought the purview of slackers....is totally acceptable, in fact, doodling helps build memory and thinking skills. And if you need additional proof just check out the Wall Street Journal article or the book Doodle Revolution by Sunni Brown.

Goal Three: Build Leadership and Collaboration
One of the goals we have had at Lee is to add collaboration and leadership into our classrooms. We will be trying some new things in our class and there are a couple of books that I've been playing with...which can add some fun and responsibility for students. We will for the most part also have groups that we work with on a regular basis. This does not mean individual assignments can be collaborated on for the final product, but there may be some opportunities to collaborate in certain stages.

These are three goals I want to focus on for the year. All three of these will fill the overarching goal of English IV - to prepare our students for college level English and the workforce.
